Anyone who walks down Dawson Street with any regularity will have noticed the ongoing drama that’s been happening with Carluccio’s lately. I went past it on Friday, only to find it closed with notices stuck to the doors saying that due to rent problems with their landlords they were effectively closed from 2nd February onwards, pending a final review. I spent the weekend in mourning (their hot chocolates are mesmerisingly good) only to go past it again today, to see a group of people sitting around a table in the brightly lit though still closed-to-the-public restaurant, having an earnest discussion. It looked as if something was happening. The notices on the door were different to the ones on Friday too – apparently they’re going to reopen shortly! Let’s hope that this actually happens and isn’t just another cruel twist in the Carluccio’s saga.
Carluccios…open or closed?

IFI Open Day
February 3, 2010 by CatrionaWe know where we’re spending our Saturday… at the FREE day of screenings at the IFI open day. We anticipate that it’s going to be overrun with people, but that’s not going to deter us, oh no… The open day is to celebrate the end of the renovations that it’s been undergoing recently, or – as Le Cool joyfully pointed out in today’s issue – its swanky new ladies toilets. The film timetable for Saturday has yet to be released, but you can find out what’s happening and reserve free tickets for one of the fourteen screenings, by popping along to the IFI at 11am on Saturday.
February Hot List
February 1, 2010 by inkywristsJanuary is finally over and hopefully with it the snow and ice. Here is Inky Wrist’s picks for the next 28 days…
Charlotte Gainsbourg-IRM
Technically it didnt come out this month but we decided it still deserved a place in the hot list! IRM is Gainsbourg’s third album, this time with the help of Beck ,who produced, arranged and mostly wrote IRM. Expect less of the sweet love songs of 5.55 , IRM is more of a darker offering.
Valentines Day-14th February
Sure some of you hate it but I like to look on the positive side. A bit of cheese never did anyone any harm.
A Single Man- From 12th February, IFI
Tom Ford makes his move from high fashion to movies with A Single Man. The film is an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s novel about an English professor in LA after the loss of his partner.
Ladurée
January 31, 2010 by CatrionaAlthough the Ladurée counter in Brown Thomas has been open since November, we haven’t done a blog post about it until now, mainly because we’ve been too busy eating macaroons to write about them. We’ve been long-distance fans of Ladurée for years, ever since watching Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, which featured a pretty stunning range of Rococco patisserie delights that were created by the Parisian company. You can imagine the near-evangelical levels of hysteria that we experienced when we heard the rumours that Ladurée was actually coming to Dublin. It’s been every bit as fantastic as we imagined.
Although Ladurée is very much at the luxury end of baking (hence the reason it’s got a swanky counter on the ground floor of BTs), it’s still pretty accessible – you can buy a single macaroon for €1.50, and pick out your favourite flavour from the trays of tastefully arranged macaroons on display. My two all-time favourites are the pistaschio and the chocolate flavoured ones – I’m particularly smitten with the pistachio one because of its bright green colouring, but the chocolate macaroon is equally delightful. If you haven’t tried one yet, do. It’s only €1.50… go on, you know you’re intrigued…
Q&A with Goatboy
January 30, 2010 by inkywristsGoatboy, aka Mark O’Sullivan, took some time out before his EP launch to answer some questions for Inky Wrists.
Where are you originally from?
I’m was born in Dublin, parents are from Kerry and Mayo so you could say I’m a pure Irish mongrel…
Why the name Goatboy?
Well, I went through a big Bill Hicks phase around 5 years ago, he has this alter ego called goatboy, anyways I named my myspace after him so it kinda just stuck…I heard the other day a band from Ireland calls themselves The Tender Trap so I could be in a worse position I suppose…
How did Goatboy come about?
I was in a Rock band for years…I wrote and sung the songs but they never really sounded the way I wanted them too, the democratic process we had turned them into something else…Anyways when that band came to end I decided to write and record new tunes. The soul objective this time was to make them sound as close as possible as to the way I heard them in my head…You could say that goatboy is me being a complete control freak when it comes to my own music…
What has been the best gig you’ve played to date?
I don’t think I’ve ever played a great gig, I think I’m kinda cursed or something cause something always goes wrong…Maybe I’m being a bit hard on myself but come watch one of my gigs and if something doesn’t go wrong pints are on me for the night…
What are your plans for the coming year?
Plans are to play a few gigs around this release and get my name out there…It’s only beginning so theirs a lot of work to be done…I want to get another EP out in the summer so It’ll be a busy year for sure…
You’ve just released your debut EP, how would you describe it in 3 words?
Grand romantic folk?
If you could pick any famous person/musican to join you in Goatboy who would it be?
It would probably be Joanna Newsom…she’s amazingly talented and hot.
You supported KT Tunstall last year, what was that like? Any exciting stories to relay?
Yeah I done that gig with my mate Al Marshall who’ll be supporting me at my EP launch…
When we got to our dressing room there was bowl of fruit and 2 crates of beer between us…
My memory is a bit patchy after that…Good gig I was told…It was a dream to play the Olympia.
Who/what are your musical influences?
I just love great songs…Love Camera Obscura, Interpol, The La’s …The list is endless…
This is a question we like to ask everyone, what is your favourite biscuit?
Hmmmm….Probably have to be Tucs…
‘Coffee, Cakes and Country Air’ @ The Bad Art Gallery
January 29, 2010 by inkywrists
Inky Wrists went (armed with cameras) to The Bad Art Gallery on Francis Street to check out the latest exhibition by Deborah Donnelly; ‘Coffee, Cakes and Country Air’. The exhibition was opened by Irish actress Brenda Fricker (Milk, Inside I’m Dancing and Veronica Guerin to name just a few films she has been in). We were blown away in particular by the more abstract landscapes, a departure from the usual cows, and fell in love with more than one. Check out The Bad Art Website for more information and don’t forget to subscribe to our youtube channel.
Goatboy EP launch

Circus Store Closing Down Sale
January 27, 2010 by CatrionaWe were a bit gutted when we heard that Circus store on South William Street is closing its doors for good on the 7th February. Circus has been one of the most exciting boutiques in Dublin since it opened three years ago, and has organized a variety of brilliant events, most recently the Cheap as Chips exhibition, which we did a post about not so long ago. We’ll be sad to see it go, especially as so many brilliant shops and restaurants seem to be folding at the moment. There is something of a silver lining in that they’re having a closing down sale in the week prior to their closure, starting on 1st February at 11am. There’ll be 60% off all stock… need we say more?
A Match Made In Heaven…
January 26, 2010 by inkywristsThe Holga Cat Camera, a camera adorned with a strange winking cat face sounds pretty damn good. But wait it actually gets better!! It has “meowing sounds” and “flashing lights” and comes in a smiling cat tin. If there was ever a camera that Inky Wrists should own this surely has to be it. Its meant to deliver a dreamy imperfect picture which to be honest sounds crap but for the cat sounds I’m willing to forgive it that. For anyone who is loving this as much as us it is available in Urban Outfitters for €59… Expect to see us wielding this camera at a club near you very soon.
